The Lost World
0After a year-long wait, it was with bated breath that we sat down to watch the brand new series of Lost last night. With an hour long catch-up special and a double bill to follow, it was quite the commitment, but when you consider how much we’ve invested in the programme so far, it seemed like the right thing to do. As followers since it’s infancy, we’ve stuck with the programme when everyone else turned their back. We hung around during the writers strike and have displayed admirable patience through each and every confusing plot change. We’ve suspended reality on several occasions, and have become accustomed to the fact that just because someone’s dead, it doesn’t mean they won’t be back the following week. But we’re just not sure if we can take it any more. We realised as the credits came up at the end of last night’s episode that we were stuck in an unhealthy relationship of the highest order. Here we were, giving up our entire Thursday evening with the vain hope of getting some answers, yet we’ve come away knowing less than we did at the beginning of the night. Lost is our bad obsession; it’s the man who keeps promising to commit, but never does, keeping us hanging on while teasing us with the promise of a happy life together. We’ve had enough, we’re putting our foot down. No. More. Lost.
After six years, it’s not going to be an easy break up, but we should have listened to our girlfriends all those series’ ago and told Lost to stick it. They’ll see us through – we’ll have wine and chocolate on a Thursday night instead, and they’ll listen with forced patience as we mourn the loss of Sawyer and Jack. But we’re determined not to go back, no matter how many sensational teasers RTE runs this week.
Bye bye Lost, it was nice knowing you.
