5 MINUTE MAKEOVER
Black Eyed Peas lead singer Fergie knows how to rock a smoking hot smokey eye. Get the look with tips from Jill Clarke for Essence
5 MINUTE MAKEOVER Fergie
“This is a smouldering smokey look that oozes glamour,” says Jill.
“It's great for a big night out. It can be hard to get this look right without looking like a drag queen –just keep the rest
of your make-up simple.”
Start the look with a really good base as this will form the entire look. A matte foundation will prevent shine and stay in place all night long.
Cover up tired eyes or red blotchy skin with concealer for a smooth clear complexion.
Enhance the cheekbones with
a sun-kissed bronzer with shimmer, like Bronzing Shimmer Powder
in Bronzing Queen €3.49 from Essence.
For best results, you will need
three colours to create a smokey
eye. Start with a base in a shimmery
cream all over the eyelid.
Then use
Duo Eyeshadow in Night Clubbing,
€2.99 as it provides two
shades of smokey greys that blend
easily together. Put the lighter shade
on the lid and then work the darker
shade into a sideways ‘V’ shape on the
outer corner of each eye.
Apply eyebrow pencil to the
brows in order to extend the
brows out further – this will create
a more dramatic feel to the look.
Finally, to achieve those cat-like
eyes, apply black liquid eyeliner
followed by two coats of Extreme
Length Sensitive Mascara from No7,
€16.25
With such a dramatic look you need to go simple with the lips. Apply a fresh shimmering gloss for a light finish.
To complete your look add a touch of Fergie with a spritz of some Fergie Outspoken Intense, €19.50 from Avon
STEAL THE LOCKS
WE LOVED CHERYL’S SLICK PONYTAIL AT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL.
STEAL THE LOCKS CHERYL COLE
We asked Lisa Laudat, the L’Oréal Paris celebrity hair stylist who created the look for Cheryl to give us a step-by-step guide.
“I created a glossy, high shine pony tail for Cheryl at the Cannes Film Festival,” said Lisa. “The sleek style perfectly complemented Cheryl’s Stephane Rolland dress.”
1. Wet hair with a spritz of water and apply Studio Line Silk
& Gloss Volume Mousse from L’Oréal Paris, €6.39,
to the roots to give hair bounce. Work the mousse into thescalp and blow dry with a large roller brush to create height and volume.
2. Create a side-parting by using a pin tail comb, this will
help to create a clean line. Slick down the front section of the hair with a pea-sized amount of Studio Flick ’N Sweep Defining Gel Cream from L’Oréal Paris, €5.39,
to hold in place.
3. Lightly backcomb the crown with a soft bristle brush
to add volume and fullness to the hair. Follow with a generous spray of Elnett Satin hairspray to secure the lift
4. Gently run a brush over the hair to smooth
the backcombing and keep the look sleek. Pull
the hair back into a ponytail in line with the
ears and secure it by hooking a bungee into the
ponytail, wrapping it around
the hair and hooking back into
itself to hold securely without
snagging.
5.
Split the ponytail into
two sections, with one
smaller than the other.
Take the smaller section and
wrap it around the top of
the larger ponytail securing
it with grips – a great way
to ensure that the grips
hold thick hair is to bend
the ends of the grips into
a hook as this will add
more support.

CATWALK BEAUTY – SUMMER SHAKE UP
Update your look with these simple twists on some of our favourite trends from the season. Irish Tatler’s Brenda McCormick shows you how.
SOFTLY DOES IT
This season’s bold brights soften into pretty pastels for the summer months. An altogether easier way to wear colour, the palette features chalky shades of pistachio, teal, lemon, lilac and sugary pink. “Pastels are huge this season,” says Charlotte Tilbury, who worked with M.A.C on major catwalk shows this year. “The trick to keeping it contemporary and wearable is to apply a soft wash of pastel on your lids with a slightly smudged eyeliner to add a smoky effect and keeping the rest of the makeup natural and clean.”

Colour Effect Dip-In Eyeshadow in Moody Blue and Posh Pink (€7.99 each) by Max Factor
THE LIGHT SIDE
Ditch the heavy matt foundation and get ready to blend textures to create a fresh, dewy base that looks like perfect skin. The summer trend is for a natural finish, with touches of gloss and highlighters adding texture and depth. Opt for the new generation sheer liquid foundations or for radiance, mix a few drops of liquid highlighter in with your usual base. Alternatively, dot a little cream highlighter or gloss on the upper cheekbones and Cupid’s bow to add definition.

JUICED UP
The vibrant lip of spring/ summer gets a playful summer makeover simply
by changing textures. There’s a fruit salad of shades to choose from with watermelon pinks, sherbet oranges and glossy red apples all on offer. Finishes veer from super-shiny glosses with just a hint of colour, to textured matt stains (as seen at the Diane von Fürstenberg show) which leave lips looking like you’ve just been sucking on an ice pop.

5 MINUTE MAKEOVER
WANT TO LOOK LIKE A SUPERMODEL? GET COCO ROCHA’S CLASSIC BEAUTIFUL LOOK WITH TIPS FROM NEIL HARRY, BRAND
EXPERT FOR ARTISTRY AND BEAUTYCYCLE
5 MINUTE MAKEOVER COCO ROCHA
“This look just oozes glamour because the make-up abides by the simple rules of ‘Facial Balance’ – strong eyes with nude lips,” says Neil. “The drama is focused on the eyes and the prominent eyebrows give structure to the eye
shape so the eyes really pop!”
“It’s a classic look so it’s doesn’t date and would suit everyone; it just depends on how much drama you want to create. A slick of liner and mascara is great for the day and can be topped up to take you into night. The peach cheeks add natural warmth to the skin, so whether you have a warm or cool complexion, you should be able to pull this look off.”
It is important to get your base right first and prep your skin. For that beautiful texture, try Artistry Intensive Skincare Renewing Peel €77.55. This will gently renew the skin’s surface so skin will feel
softer, smoother and look more radiant.
Correctly shaped eyebrows can give an instant eyelift. Firstly, brush your brows upwards and outwards, and using a light feathering motion, mimic your hair growth and fi ll in the blanks. Voilà! Perfectly shaped brows.
Using the Artistry Eye Define Liner in Noir, €14.75, line inside your eyes fi rst, then follow close to your upper and lower lash line on the outside edge of your eye. Next use Artistry Control Eye Liner, €18.90 to give definition on the edges of the eyes. Dot the edges first so each eye looks symmetrical. Finish with a couple of coats of Artistry Total Waterproof Mascara in Black, €22.70.
Finally, apply a very natural peachy cream lipstick to give lips the merest hint of colour.

HAIR REPORT - Spring / Summer 2011
The catwalks have showcased an array of styles for this season. We show you how to create this season's hairstyles in a few easy steps.
“This season was all about a strong woman and a rich, romantic glamour but also a little decadence, too. We saw everything from small, minimalist head shapes to full, flouncy curls and waves.”
Guido, Redken Creative Consultant
Seen at: Julien Macdonald, Naeem Kahn, Marc Jacobs
The super-glam, 70s vibe wasn’t restricted to makeup this season: hair was shiny, glossy and very, very big. At Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, hair was heavily textured; a crimped effect was brushed through to create an airy, loose look with a matte texture. At Julien Macdonald, Giles and John Richmond it was pure Jerry Hall glam with hair big and wavy.
Create the look
1 Section the hair then soak each section in hairspray and curl it with large barrel tongs or rollers.
2 Complete the whole head then brush through to release the curls. Use straighteners at the ends to create a modern twist on the look.
3 To finish the style and ensure the waves are defined, apply a few drops of smoothing serum on the hand then spread it lightly onto a hairbrush.
4 Gently run the brush through hair to smooth down any flyaways and create that all-important shine.
Seen at: Costume National, Chloé, Yves Saint Laurent, Prada
Sleek looks were prominent on the catwalks with neat rolls, buns and plaits worn tight against the head. Groomed and ‘finished’ looks saw hair pulled in perfect ponytails at Roland Mouret and buns at Chloé, elegant rolls at Armani and lacquered plaits at Emanuel Ungaro. “Shine for spring/summer 2011 is bold and almost wet-looking, like it’s painted on,” Guido explains. “This lacquered effect makes it impactful on the runway, but can also work for everyday.”
Create the YSL look
1 Layering products to create the proper amount of hold and shine is key to this trend.
2 Start by applying gel to create a high-shine look, then roll hair inward, working horizontally across the head.
3 Use hairpins to secure the roll in place, then layer on a fixing spray for a lacquered effect.
Seen at: Jason Wu, Chanel, Rodarte, Carolina Herrera
Hair adornments of all descriptions were big on the spring catwalks. Stunning feather and chain ties kept ponytails in place at Chanel, while head scarves made an appearance at Moschino, Armani and Jason Wu, with material merged with hair.
Create the look
1 Blow dry hair straight. Separate four sections of hair at the back and, one section at a time, braid fabric through the hair and secure at the bottom with an elastic.
2 Leave excess fabric out at the bottom of each braid. Spray each braid liberally with hairspray.
3 Twist the braids up and pin to the back of the head, setting the style with lots of hairspray.
4 Collect all four braids and tie the fabric into one large bow at the end to create a ‘flower.’
5 Pull the fabric flower upwards and secure at the nape of the neck with hair pins.
